The body of Mariam Khatun, 19, the second wife of Gazi Nazrul Islam, the member of parliament for the Satkhira-4 seat, has been recovered hanging in a flat at the Nam Bhaban under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station in the capital.

Police went to the scene at about 7pm on Sunday after receiving information. Mariam’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in a room at the Nam Bhaban.

The deputy commissioner of police (DC) for the Tejgaon division of DMP, Ibne Mizan, told reporters: “I came to the scene with the police station officers after receiving the information. The body was seen hanging from the fan through the window of a room in the building. The forensic teams of PBI and CID have been called. The police station officers will enter the room after that.”

Gazi Nazrul Islam, the member of parliament for Satkhira-4, drew attention in July when a video of private moments spread on social media. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him after that. The party took the decision to expel him on grounds of moral turpitude.
