The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved 10 development projects at a cost of about 3,891 crore taka — five new projects, three revised ones and two extensions. The approvals came at Tuesday’s (9 June) ECNEC meeting at the Secretariat, chaired by Prime Minister and ECNEC chairperson Tarique Rahman.
According to the planning ministry, the total cost of the 10 approved projects is 3,890 crore 97 lakh taka — 3,810 crore 62 lakh from the government’s own funds and 80 crore 35 lakh from the implementing agencies’ own financing. The largest is the regional highway development project from Anwara in Chattogram to Idmoni in Cox’s Bazar: under the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry, the Anwara-Banshkhali-Toitong-Pekua-Badarkhali-Chakaria (Idmoni) regional highway will be upgraded to proper standard and width.
Also approved were the “Maintenance and Rehabilitation of the Barishal Irrigation Project (Phase 1)” under the Water Resources Ministry; an “Integrated Upazila Land Complex Construction” project under the Land Ministry; the Mymensingh City Corporation city-building project under the Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry; a project to add lifts at circuit houses in 33 districts and at the Thakurgaon DC office under the Public Administration Ministry; the “Bangladesh Children’s Hospital and Institute Expansion Project-2” in the health sector; and the revised proposal for the “Cancer Centre at Dhaka CMH (Phase 2)” under the Defence Ministry. Two education-ministry projects were approved — the third revision of the Madrasah Education Management and Information System (MEMIS) Support project and the third revision of the project to install multimedia classrooms at 653 madrasas — along with the first revised proposal for the “Capacity Enhancement of Existing Grid Substations and Transmission Lines” project under the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.
The meeting was also briefed on six projects costing under 50 crore taka each, including water supply and sanitation improvements in 30 municipalities, waste management and congestion relief for Dhaka South City Corporation, expansion of postal services, infrastructure expansion at Dhaka Cantonment, the second phase of the child-marriage prevention programme and the establishment of Paikgachha Agricultural College in Khulna. Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, cabinet members and senior officials attended.
