U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticised former President Barack Obama over the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA). He alleged that, as part of the deal, the Obama administration tried to effectively bribe Iran by giving it a large sum of money.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, Trump said Obama’s JCPOA deal had given Iran $1.7 billion in cash. The money, brought from a bank, was sent to Iran aboard a Boeing 757 aircraft, he said.
Trump claimed that after the cash-carrying plane reached Tehran, the Iranians welcomed it and celebrated receiving the money. In his words, Obama tried to solve problems by handing over money this way. “I did not follow that path,” he said.
Trump also mocked Iran’s reaction. He said the Iranians had laughed at Obama and considered him weak.
In 2015, Iran and world powers signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or nuclear deal, easing international sanctions in exchange for various restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear programme. Trump was critical of the deal from the start and, after coming to power, withdrew the United States from it in 2018.
