Three men have been arrested over the alleged gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl in Ashulia, an industrial area on the outskirts of Dhaka, police said. A fourth accused is absconding.
Mohammad Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia police station, confirmed the arrests on Sunday morning. According to police, the girl was lured to a rented house in the Jamgora area of Yarpur union on Saturday, where she was gang-raped. Police conducted a special drive on Saturday night and arrested three suspects, all aged 18.
According to police and eyewitness sources, the girl was taken to the house through a prior acquaintance, and three men there gang-raped her. A sub-inspector (SI) of the Jamgora police outpost and accompanying officers carried out the drive and arrested the three. A fourth accused, who is absconding, also faces allegations of concealing information and destroying evidence, police said.
OC Tariqul Islam said: ‘In the incident of the gang-rape of the girl, three people were arrested in an immediate drive. Operations are continuing to arrest the absconding accused.’ He added: ‘The process of taking legal action against them is under way.’
Earlier, on Wednesday, a six-year-old child was raped in the Lalartek area of Shimulia union in Ashulia. A case was filed over that incident, but the accused has not yet been arrested.
