A new educational institution run by the Bangladesh Army, the Army International Islamic Institute (AIIR), has formally begun its journey. Army chief General Waker-uz-Zaman inaugurated the institute, established in the Jolshiri housing project area of the capital, on Monday.

At the same event, he also unveiled, by video teleconference (VTC), the foundation stones of Army International Islamic Institutes to be established in Barishal, Savar, Bogura, Sylhet, Chattogram, Cumilla and Jashore.

The event was told that the Bangladesh Army had, from its inception, played an important role in developing the country’s education system and building human resources by running various quality educational institutions. Considering present-day needs, the Army International Islamic Institute had been established to build citizens equipped with knowledge, ethics, leadership qualities and human values, combining a modern education system with values-based education.

The institute will ensure a modern, Cambridge-curriculum-based English-medium education alongside religious and moral values-based education, the event was told.

Speakers expressed the hope that the Army International Islamic Institute would grow into an excellent centre for developing education, ideals and religious-moral values. Its students, they said, would become ideal citizens enriched with knowledge, discipline, patriotism and human values in the light of the Quran and Sunnah, contributing to the welfare of the country and nation, and that the institute would also play an important role in building responsible leadership at national and international levels.

The inaugural event was attended by principal staff officers of Army Headquarters, general officers commanding (GOCs) of various divisions, senior military officers, distinguished figures associated with the institution, teachers and students, parents and journalists.
