TEKNAF — Border Guard Bangladesh has recovered 14 fishermen abducted by Myanmar’s Arakan Army, the force said Saturday. Thirteen of those returned are Bangladeshi and one is a Rohingya living in a refugee camp, officials said.
Lt. Col. Md. Hanifur Rahman Bhuiyan, commander of BGB Battalion 2 in Teknaf, confirmed the recovery.
A BGB delegation took custody of the 14 fishermen from the Arakan Army along the zero line of the Naf River on Saturday and brought them to Teknaf jetty, Bhuiyan said. The fishermen are in the process of being handed over to their families, he said.
According to BGB, several Bangladeshi fishermen unintentionally crossed into Myanmar waters from the Bay of Bengal at various points in 2025 and 2026 and were detained by the Arakan Army. They were then moved to camps inside Myanmar controlled by the group and held for varying periods.
“Alongside protecting the border, BGB has consistently played a responsible role in ensuring the safety of life and property of the nation’s people,” Bhuiyan said. “The fishermen were brought home through BGB’s professionalism, sincerity and effective coordination in addressing the humanitarian crisis. Such humanitarian work will continue in the future.”
