Ripon Kazi, 35, president of the Gulishakhali union Sramikdal in Amtali upazila, Barguna, was hacked to death late Tuesday (June 30) in what his family describes as a premeditated killing led by his own father.

The attack occurred around 11:45 p.m. at Gagonkha in Patuakhali Sadar upazila. Gulishakhali union Chhatra Dal president Rifat Kazi and his associates hacked and beat Ripon to death in front of Faruk Doctor’s house, police said.

The family alleges the killing was orchestrated by Ripon’s father, Mizanur alias Bhutto Kazi, over a long-running feud stemming from the father’s multiple marriages and a political rivalry that intensified after the fall of the previous government.

According to eyewitness Rajib Kazi, a cousin who was riding with Ripon, the two were traveling by motorcycle from Bazarghona toward their home village of Kalibari around 11:30 p.m. when 15 to 20 attackers lying in ambush blocked their path. Rasel Kazi struck Ripon with a sharp weapon, causing both riders to fall from the motorcycle.

The attackers then hacked and beat Ripon with local weapons while Rajib escaped by jumping into a nearby canal, he said. Locals helped Rajib take the critically injured Ripon to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Ripon’s brother, Sabbir Kazi, said the father-son conflict began years ago over the father’s multiple marriages. Two years ago, Ripon beat his father and broke his leg. The father retaliated by beating Ripon in February but was not satisfied, Sabbir said. He alleges Mizanur Kazi then conspired with his nephew Sajib Kazi, an employee at Dhaka airport, along with Rifat Kazi and associates Rasel, Rahat, Sohag, and Monir Kazi to plan the murder.

Police recovered Mizanur Kazi’s mobile phone from the scene. The father and the attackers fled after the killing. Locals caught Mostafa Kazi and Firoz Kazi attempting to flee and handed them to Amtali police, who transferred them to Patuakhali Sadar station for interrogation.

The victim’s mother, Amena Begum, is preparing to file a formal case at Patuakhali Sadar police station. Patuakhali Sadar OC Md. Moniruzzaman said the two detainees are being questioned and legal action will be taken against those involved.
