Former Malaysian prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad turns 101 today (Friday, July 10). To mark the occasion, the country’s current prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has sent his warm greetings and good wishes.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, Anwar Ibrahim wrote: “May Tun always be blessed with the mercy, good health and endless blessings of Almighty Allah. InshaAllah.” Dr Mahathir Mohamad was born on July 10, 1925, in Alor Setar, in the Malaysian state of Kedah.

A doctor who became a politician, Mahathir is regarded as one of the architects of Malaysia’s modernisation. He first took office as prime minister in 1981 and governed for 22 straight years until 2003. Over that long period he played a key role in transforming Malaysia into a modern state through industrialisation, infrastructure development and economic growth.

He then returned as prime minister at the age of 92 after a historic victory in the 2018 general election, setting a record as the world’s oldest serving prime minister. He held office in this second term until 2020.
