The Supreme Court was rocked Sunday by protests demanding the resignation of Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal. The protest began Sunday afternoon, with demonstrators declaring the attorney general unwelcome in his post. Lawyers staged the protest at the Supreme Court demanding Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal’s resignation. Under the slogan “One point, one demand — the attorney general’s resignation,” they held the program Sunday in front of the Supreme Court’s annex building.

Organized under the banner of the “Bangladesh Nationalist Lawyers Forum,” lawyers held a procession around the Supreme Court premises. They raised several demands, including an investigation into alleged irregularities and so-called “appointment trading” in the recruitment of deputy attorneys general (DAGs) and assistant attorneys general (AAGs), as well as recognition for the forum’s dedicated leaders and activists.

At the protest, lawyer Sharif U Ahmed said: “We want the resignation of Attorney General Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal. During the One-Eleven period, he said he wasn’t involved in BNP politics. But now he is patronizing fascists and trying to help them regroup.”

He further said: “Ruhul Quddus Kajal has lost all qualification to remain in the post of attorney general.” Alleging that corruption worth hundreds of crores of taka had occurred in appointments at the Attorney General’s office, he demanded an investigation.

Sharif U Ahmed said: “From today’s gathering, we declare Ruhul Quddus Kajal unwelcome at the Attorney General’s office. Our movement will continue until his resignation.”

Lawyers who took part in the protest said they want an Attorney General’s office that is “free of fascists, hidden agendas, and corruption.” They also announced they would continue the movement over these demands.
