A dialogue titled “Review of the ’36 July’ contribution debate and accountability for failure” has been held on state reform, political unity and an assessment of achievements and failures following the July mass uprising.
The dialogue was organised by Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party on Sunday (2 August) at the auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.
In his chair’s address, AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Manju said that although two years had passed since the July mass uprising, failures were being discussed more than achievements. Those who created national disunity by raising debate over contributions after Sheikh Hasina’s flight must bear the bulk of the blame for the failures, he said.
He said two governments had held office since 5 August — first the interim government and then the BNP government. If no visible change came to state reform and people’s living conditions, both governments would have to stand in the dock of history, he said. When the BNP government completes six months, AB Party would hold another dialogue comparing it with the interim government’s first six months, presenting the real picture of the economy, prices, law and order and public life, along with statistics, before the people.
He said that while there had been hundreds of protests during the interim government, there had been no significant protests over demands in the current government’s past five months. Describing attempts to silence criticism through the use of force as very regrettable, he warned that this would backfire on the government.
