Truck hits auto-rickshaw in Ramu, killing three including two sisters

Three people, including two sisters, have been killed when a truck hit an auto-rickshaw in Ramu in Cox’s Bazar. Three people were seriously injured in the incident and admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

The crash happened at about 2pm on Monday. Local people rescued the injured and took them to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. One of those killed was a man, whose identity has not been established. The two sisters killed were Rubina Akter and Shahina Akter, daughters of Jafar Alam, a resident of the Harinmara area of Ukhiya upazila.

According to family and local sources, the two sisters had gone to the court in Cox’s Bazar in the morning over a family case. They were returning home by CNG-run auto-rickshaw after finishing their business. On the way, a truck coming from the opposite direction hit the auto-rickshaw in the Schoolpahar area of Khuniapalong in the upazila. One person was killed on the spot. The two sisters died after being taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Initial information indicates that there were six people in the auto-rickshaw, including the driver, at the time of the crash.

An eyewitness, Abdul Gafur, said: “The crash happened in front of my eyes as I was taking my children to a coaching class. One person died on the spot in the collision. Local people then rescued the injured and took them to hospital.”

The officer in charge of Ramu highway police station, Sukanta Chakraborty, said legal steps were being taken over the incident. The highway police are working to establish the real cause of the crash.
