Police recovered the body of garment worker Shamima Akter, 26, in Sreepur, Gazipur. Her family said her husband, Suman Mia, has been missing since the incident.
The body was recovered at about 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, from Bepari Bari in the Kewa Paschimkhanda area of Sreepur municipality.
Shamima was the daughter of Kajal Mia of Uttar Panchanandapur village in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh. She worked at a local garment factory. Her family said she married Suman Mia of Islampur upazila in Jamalpur about two years ago in an arranged marriage. It was the second marriage for both.
Kajal Mia alleged that the couple initially had a good relationship, but Suman recently became addicted to drugs and online gambling. The issues frequently led to arguments between them.
He also alleged that Suman assaulted his daughter at about 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, breaking a bone in her nose. The family later tried to resolve the matter.
According to Kajal Mia, Suman called his son Mozammel at about 1 a.m. and said Shamima was not opening the door. Mozammel, who rented a home in nearby Munshibari, came and called out to her but received no response. He informed other family members, who later went to sleep. When the door remained closed in the morning, they alerted police. Officers broke open the door and recovered Shamima’s hanging body from inside the room.
Sreepur police Sub-Inspector Mazharul Islam said the body was sent to the morgue at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. He said investigators would determine whether it was a killing or suicide after receiving the autopsy report and completing the investigation.
