A roughly 300-foot dirt road in Faridpur’s Nagarakanda has not been repaired in three decades. The road in Kodalia village of Kodalia Shahidnagar union turns muddy after even light rain during the monsoon, causing long-running suffering for residents of about 100 families.
A visit to the area found that the nearly 300-foot road stretching from the paved road near the Kodalia board office to Thakurbari Jame Mosque remains unpaved. During the rainy season, water accumulates and creates mud, making even walking difficult. Children, elderly people and worshippers going to the mosque suffer especially. Local residents said people sometimes slip in the mud and are injured.
Residents said they have been demanding repair and paving of the road for about 30 years. They have submitted repeated appeals to the union parishad chairman, members and other public representatives. Before elections, public representatives promise to repair the road, but no effective initiative is taken afterward. As a result, local people have had to endure hardship year after year.
Local social worker Saifur Rahman said he would personally take an initiative to repair the road to reduce public suffering. He said he would also try to contact the relevant authorities and take necessary steps to have the road paved through government initiative.
Affected residents said the road is important not only for local movement but also for access to Thakurbari Jame Mosque. They urged the upazila administration and relevant authorities to intervene urgently to repair and pave the road and permanently end the long-running suffering.
