Rujuka Begum, 30, and her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter Yamni died after an unidentified vehicle struck them in Pubail, Gazipur. Rujuka died after being taken to hospital with critical injuries, and her daughter later died while undergoing treatment.
The crash occurred at about 2 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, on the Gazipur-Gausia Bypass highway in front of Kali Factory in the Meghdubi area under Pubail police station.
Rujuka was the daughter of Sekandar Ali of Baghata village in Sreebardi, Sherpur, and the wife of Monir Hossain. She and Yamni lived in a rented home owned by Mostafa in the Salna Bazar area of Gazipur city.
Police said the mother and daughter were found critically injured on the highway after being struck late at night. Pubail police Sub-Inspector Mohammad Anwar Hossain and a team reached the scene after receiving a call through the national emergency service 999. Police took them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
A doctor declared Rujuka dead after she arrived at the hospital. Doctors tried to save Yamni, but she died at about 3 a.m. while undergoing treatment.
The unidentified vehicle fled the scene, and police could not immediately identify either the vehicle or its driver. Police said they were working to identify the vehicle and detain the driver.
Pubail police Officer-in-Charge Md Atikur Rahman said the bodies were at the hospital morgue and that legal proceedings were underway as police sought the vehicle involved.
Their relatives called for the driver to be identified and brought to justice.
