Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport remains fully operational despite U.S. sanctions, its chief executive Ramin Kashef-Azar said.
Kashef-Azar told Iranian media the airport is still operating flights to more than 30 international destinations. On Sept. 23, the day the sanctions took effect, 60 flights were successfully operated from the airport, he said.
The U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Iran’s aviation sector on Sept. 8. On that day, 27 more Iranian airlines were brought under sanctions, bringing the country’s remaining airlines that were not already listed under the measures.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned at the time that airports and companies involved in fueling, landing services or ticket sales for aircraft operated by Iranian airlines could also face secondary sanctions. That would put them at risk of being cut off from the U.S. financial system.
Oman and the United Arab Emirates have since suspended Iranian flights. Four airports in Iraq have also halted Iranian flights.
However, Iranian airlines are still operating flights to China, Russia and other countries.
