Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon found serious flaws in new textbook printing during a midnight inspection of six printing presses in Dhaka.
After 12 am on Monday, September 28, he made an unannounced visit to six presses in the Matuail area: Mousumi Offset Press, Faiza Printing Press, Shoili Printers, Bornoshikha Offset Printers, Sonali Web Printers and National Printers.
The education minister said intelligence reports had prompted the surprise inspection and that he found the condition of textbook printing extremely poor, including substandard print quality.
During the visits, Milon observed the actual state of textbook production and spoke with those involved.
He checked the quality of the books and overall printing progress. The minister stressed maintaining required standards so students receive quality textbooks on time and gave instructions to ensure production quality.
National Curriculum and Textbook Board sources said the government plans to print 30 crore 92 lakh 28 thousand 439 books for pre-primary, primary, Ebtedayee, secondary and ethnic minority students for the 2027 academic year.
Of the total, 8 crore 21 lakh 67 thousand 730 books will be printed for pre-primary, primary and ethnic minority students. Another 3 crore 32 lakh 96 thousand 400 books will be printed for grades one through five in Ebtedayee schools, while about 18 crore books are planned for grades six through nine.
At the secondary level, grade nine will receive the largest allocation, with 5 crore 56 lakh 27 thousand 235 copies planned. The government will also print 9 thousand 4 Braille books for visually impaired students.
Several new subjects are being added to textbooks for the 2027 academic year. Books on sports and our culture will be introduced in grade four, while joyful learning and technical education will be added in grade six. Preparations are under way to print the new titles and other revised books and send them to educational institutions on schedule.
Officials involved with NCTB said the government will spend Tk 1 thousand 890 crore 16 lakh 39 thousand 328 on textbook printing this year.
